Planning within Nidderdale National Landscape is undertaken by North Yorkshire Council (previously by the local authorities for Harrogate, Hambleton, and Richmondshire). North Yorkshire County Council follows duties and policies designed to protect the unique character and beauty of our landscape.

They consult the National Landscape Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) on applications for planning permission that would be likely to have an impact on Nidderdale National Landscape’s environment.

Planning consultations

We advise North Yorkshire Council on planning decisions impacting the Nidderdale National Landscape, ensuring alignment with our conservation goals. The JAC reviews around 150 planning applications annually, focusing on those where members think they can add value to decisions being made about an application.

This includes applications:

  • which are for large scale developments, or
  • small scale developments which may have a significant or cumulative impact on the landscape such as the conversion of traditional vernacular buildings for equestrian or residential use, or
  • developments which are in open countryside outside towns and villages.
  • Developments that impact on the quality of the built environment and heritage of the area.

FAQs

The Joint Advisory Committee or JAC reviews planning applications that could significantly impact the landscape, ensuring developments align with our conservation goals.

The Nidderdale National Landscape Team provides advice directly to North Yorkshire Council, primarily concerning landscape and visual impacts. If you wish to discuss a planning application or an inappropriate development affecting the Nidderdale National Landscape, for example, because you are concerned about its impact, you can contact us.

However, we do not have enforcement powers and the process to formally seek action against inappropriate development is through North Yorkshire Council’s planning enforcement team.

If you are making a planning application, you will need to first contact North Yorkshire Council, who will then consult Nidderdale National Landscape Team if necessary.

Before submitting your application, please have a look at Planning Policy and Guidance.  This provides links to key documents, sets out key principles and explains the scale and nature of developments for which the National Landscape is likely to be consulted.

For issues related to minerals and waste disposal, contact North Yorkshire Council for guidance.

Nidderdale National Landscape supports small-scale, sensitive renewable energy projects. North Yorkshire Council can advise on planning permissions for these initiatives. Refer to our Renewable Energy Position Statement for advice and guidance.
